Mumbai: Filmmaker Aarti Kadav has bagged the Best Director award for The Astronaut and His Parrot at the recently concluded Fantasia International Short Film Competition in Montreal. The science fiction film stars Ali Fazal in the lead role.

The film is about a space explorer who is swept away in a vacuum with a low supply of oxygen due to an accident. In his final moments in space, he desperately tries to send messages to his daughter through signals, but these are received by a gaudy parrot in an astrologer’s stall.

Pleasantly surprised after receiving this news, Aarti said, I am grateful to the wonderful Ali Fazal, who has agreed to give his hundred percent to the film. Our goal has always been to make a solid sci-fi film with maximum- on-camera effects and use VFX with precision and intelligence and my team put in their time for solid preparation.

She added, “I am doing festival runs and in talks with a few platforms, including a platform that distributes films in the US. I am looking forward to a solid pipeline for well-made short films that people can enjoy watching.

A trained computer science engineer, Aarti worked as a software developer in the US before deciding to switch profession. His debut film, Cargo, which released in 2019, received a positive response from the cinema lovers. The film starring Vikrant Massey and Shweta Tripathi Sharma is also a sci-fi drama.
